Maritime Dangerous Goods
Course Overview
This two-day in-person programme covers the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code requirements for shipping dangerous goods by sea, with specific application to African seaport operations. South Africa and other African maritime nations strictly enforce IMDG Code compliance, and non-compliance can result in cargo seizure, fines, and criminal prosecution.
Participants will learn how to classify dangerous goods, pack and mark shipments correctly, prepare the required documentation, and understand stowage and segregation requirements. Practical exercises use real dangerous goods scenarios from African trade including chemicals, mining reagents, fuel products, and agricultural chemicals.
The programme also covers the interface between maritime dangerous goods regulations and port state control inspections, shipper responsibilities, and the role of the freight forwarder in ensuring compliance throughout the shipping chain.
